OCT takes centre stage at 100% Optical

Increasing challenges around the number of patients on hospital ophthalmology waiting lists, and how they can be managed in the community, is uppermost in many practitioners’ minds. Delegates to 100% Optical (1-3 March) may well be looking to become better equipped to embrace the opportunity to provide greater care – particularly for glaucoma patients.

Optical coherence tomography, in conjunction with AI, is set to reduce the high number of false-positive referrals which are placing a strain on NHS resources, and the missed diagnoses potentially leading to irreversible sight loss.

OSA members at 100% Optical will be on hand to offer advice on the best devices for each practice’s needs – and the means to future-proofing a practice for the next decade.

Altris AI will be on the 100% Optical OSA stand on Sunday 2 March at 2.15pm promoting the new Glaucoma Optic Disc Analysis which is focused on the role of AI in glaucoma and macular pathology detection and treatment.

Already detecting a wide range of pathologies, including nAMD, dAMD, DR, and DME, Altris AI is now enhancing glaucoma detection—where early, subtle signs are critical, says Mark Braddon, Head of Sales, Atris AI.

The device assigns a severity score for optic disc damage and enables cross-platform evaluation, allowing optometrists to analyse macula and optic disc data across different, and multiple, OCT devices and protocols. Altris AI now supports wide OCT scans (up to 12mm) enabling a more comprehensive analysis of both the macula and optic disc.

BiB will be promoting the complete range of OCTs from Optopol, and is proud to be launching the Revo HR OCT with high speed, high resolution ultra-wide field capabilities. The Optopol “FC” models of OCT have a built-in colour fundus camera, valued for UK diabetic screening programmes.

Birmingham Optical’s NIDEK RSDII Duoscan combines OCT with fundus photography. The multimodal analysis includes autofluorescence imaging and OCT-Angiography, making it a versatile device:

· High-Speed Imaging: capturing images at a speed of 70,000 A-scans per second, significantly reducing the time required for image acquisition.

· Wide Area Scan: offering a wide area scan of 12 x 9 mm, allowing for detailed imaging of both macula and optic disc in a single shot.

· Retina Map Scan: combining macular and disc OCT with colour fundus photography, enabling analysis of the retina in one rapid scan.

· Denoising Software: utilizing deep learning techniques, it automatically denoises B-scans, producing high-definition images comparable to those obtained through multiple-image averaging.

· Enhanced Image Quality: adjusting brightness and contrast, ensuring advanced image quality and clarity.

· User-Friendly Interface: simplifying the measurement process with 3D eye tracking and automation features.

Grafton Optical’s Mocean 3000 SLO OCT uses 36,000 a-scans/s speed to enable high-resolution cross-sectional images with minimised speckle noise. Simultaneously acquiring OCT images and 47-degree fundus images using SLO technology, it provides a real-time overview of the retina. The 3-in-1 scan capability – for macula, disc and cornea – uses eye tracking for increased repeatability.

· 3mm scan depth for detailed view of vitreous, retina and choroid

· Real-time 45° SLO retinal imaging

· SLO-based retinal tracking

· 16mm angle-to-angle scan

· Comprehensive analysis of retina, glaucoma and cornea

· 50 images averaging to intelligently reduce speckle noise

Heidelberg Engineering’s imaging in optometry and ophthalmology will be on display, showing the benefits for a myriad of retinal diseases and glaucoma with the SPECTRALIS and the ANTERION devices.

“Heidelberg Engineering’s core DNA is the ability to track change to microns of detail over time. This gives great confidence to the clinician. AI is going to play a major part in the future, but it doesn’t talk to you and take a history of the condition. We are looking to position clinicians to be ahead of the game,” said Grahame Wood, Heidelberg Engineering UK General Manager.

With AI set to become a driver for referral he is keen for delegates to see the full functionality and the way the Heidelberg Engineering’s Heyex software connects to other devices for a comprehensive image management system.

Heidelberg Engineering technology will also be on display on the Essilor Luxottica stand, highlighting the fact that it is now part of the multi-faced optical group.

Mainline Instruments is offering 0% finance on the first five purchases of the Huvitz HOCT-1 at 100% Optical. The all-in-one OCT with Fundus Camera, Angiography, Biometry and Topography is designed for diagnoses of both anterior and posterior diseases, plus acquiring essential data for cataract surgery say Mainline Instruments.

Topcon’s Maestro2 offers both OCT and OCT-A with true-colour photography and anterior imaging to support diagnosis and patient management.

Topcon’s Triton DRI OCT utilises Swept Source technology for a clear visualization of anatomical features up to the choroidal-scleral interface. The Smart Denoise algorithm enhances signal-to-noise ratio, improving image quality of 3D OCT and 3-9mm OCT-A images and eliminating the need for averaging. The addition of a widefield lens for DRI Triton OCTs allows clinicians to expand the field of view from approximately 40° with a 12mm scan to approximately 63° using a 21mm scan pattern for both OCT and OCT-Angiography.

New anterior metrics facilitate a 9mm scan, providing epithelial, stromal, and corneal thickness maps, as well as semi-automated calculation of anterior chamber angles from anterior line scans, says Fergal Byron, Senior Technical Product Manager, Topcon UK & Ireland.

Performance Finance has extensive experience in working with practices to ensure the investment in OCT will mean a profit for the business, often with finance terms of 60 months. The revenue can be significant when five or more patients are being scanned each day, advises Performance Finance.
