The pace at which technology, in particular AI, is now moving means the optical profession is primed for transformation. Unlocking interoperability between systems and devices was the key message at the OSA’s summer event in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Roy Stoner, OSA Chair, welcomed delegates from across the optical supply chain to the Grade II listed Welcombe Hotel for the two-day event which brought the best networking opportunities and collaborations amongst industry partners.
Digital imaging, practice management systems, diagnostics, lenses, frames, sustainability and financial service providers came together to engage in the path forward.
Karl Jeebaun, CEO of Opticare Innovations, the commercial arm of the OSA, promoted the benefits of the Green Charter, aligned with NHS Evergreen policy for public sector procurement, and a requirement for optical practices by 2027. The five levels of accreditation for the Green Charter provide the means to ultimately reach Net Zero with templates and guidance at every stage for all optical businesses and practices. The first levels of self-assessment is now live and can be accessed via https://greencharter.uk
DICOM – the driver for the adoption of integrated technology across optometry and ophthalmology – was a major focus as the use of AI driven tools become mainstream in every field of healthcare.
“The file format of choice, DICOM, will ensure that outputs for patients and clinicians are clear and interoperable. Mandatory for all new devices, we are working closely with the DICOM task and Final working group to ensure an efficient and safe patient care pathway,” said Karl.
Regulatory advice updates were given by OSA consultant, Ann Blackmore, who urged all OSA members to make use of this monitoring service, which is a valuable part of the optical body membership. 100% Optical 2026 was discussed with a comprehensive report on the drive to increase the volume and decision-making quality of visitors. Closer Still’s Marketing Manager, Sarah Daniels, talked through the plans for greater engagement with the optical community in 2026 and targeted marketing to new and loyal visitors.
