Mainline Instruments

Diagnostics for dry eye, lens meters and non-contact tonometers – just some of the premium practice essentials – are supplied by the team at Mainline Instruments.

Like many optical businesses, Mainline Instruments is based in the West Midlands, and was founded in 1997. Led by Managing Director Simon Hawkins, and his team of 18, they pride themselves on the level of service which they provide, and this was recognised by being chosen as 2022 OPTICIAN Supplier of the Year.

“We supply a wide variety of diagnostic and screening equipment to support dispensing opticians, and optometrists. Pre-screening technology includes the Huvitz HTR-1A, a 4:1 device launched just a few months ago; and the Tomey MR-6000 multifunctional unit which incorporates a suite of functions for dry eye diagnosis. These neat devices help with space and can reduce waiting times for patients,” said Simon.

“Another innovative device we supply is the iCare DRSplus which utilises a confocal fundus imaging system, capturing both eyes in under 45 seconds with minimal user training. We offer a wide range of products within diagnostic imaging, perimetry, tonometry, and OCT. For all our devices we run in-person training sessions for DOs, optometrists and practice managers – sometimes online but it’s always best in-person, we find,” he added.

This close support for optical businesses gives Mainline Instruments a great insight into the business of running High Street premises –

“The biggest challenge for any practice currently is interoperability and connecting devices for data storage.  We always seek compatible technology to ensure an easy flow from the consulting room to the PMS and to make the data accessible for referrals.”

Mainline Instruments, along with all OSA members, is focused on sustainability and is striving for Net Zero –

“We have switched to electric vehicles across the sales and service fleets in support of the government’s initiative to reduce 68% of carbon emissions by 2030. We’ve also installed solar panels which power our head office year-round, and we’re fulfilling several of our customers partnership standards to ensure we’re doing our part in helping the environment,” added Simon.
